NATUROPATHIC MEDICINE FAQ

Philosophy of Naturopathic Medicine

These principles form the characteristic foundation and core of Naturopathic medicine. Naturopathic physicians aim to integrate every one of these principles into all aspects of diagnosis and treatment.

First, Do No Harm
(Primum Non Nocere)

A naturopathic physician will choose the least invasive, most nontoxic treatment that will restore health. This minimizes harmful side effects and avoids the simple suppression of symptoms.

The Healing Power of Nature
(Vis Medicatrix Naturae)

This refers to the fact that within every person resides the power to heal, the "vis medicatrix naturae." Naturopathic physicians recognize, respect and work with this power. It is the role of the doctor, as well, as the patient to remove any obstacles which may be hindering this healing power (such as stress, poor diet). Additionally, the doctor supports and augments the body's inherent power to heal through the use of carefully selected therapeutic interventions.

Identify and Treat the Cause of Disease
(Tolle Causam)

Whereas conventional medicine focuses on alleviating symptoms, Naturopathic medicine uses these symptoms as a guide to identify the underlying cause of illness. Whether the cause of illness is emotional trauma, years of poor diet and stress, physical injury, or something else, it is the role of the doctor to assist the patient in uncovering these contributory factors. It is only through removal of the cause that complete health can be restored.

Treat the Whole Person

Disease process results from a complex interaction of mental, emotional, physical, spiritual, genetic, social and environmental factors. Naturopathic physicians consider all of these factors in each patient, in order to most optimally individualize treatment of the whole person.

Doctor as Teacher
(Docere)

Naturopathic physicians act as guides for their patients, empowering them to take responsibility for their own health. As teachers, they help the patient fully understand their disease process and the rationale for treatments prescribed.

Prevention

At no other time in history has preventive medicine been as critical to one's health as it is today. In today's world, more stressors are impinging upon our lives than ever before, from hectic lifestyles to toxins present in our food, air and water. Naturopathic physicians teach their patients how to avoid these stressors, thereby helping them maximize health and prevent chronic disease.

Naturopathic Medical Education & Training

Naturopathic Medical Doctors are the only physicians who receive complete training in conventional medicine as well as the philosophy and modalities of natural medicine. Naturopathic physicians are the leaders in diagnosing and treating their patients using both natural and traditional medicine.

Licensed naturopathic medical doctors (N.M.D./N.D.) attend a four-year graduate level naturopathic medical school where they are educated in all of the same basic sciences as a conventional M.D. In addition to this training, they are extensively educated in the philosophy and implementation of safe and effective natural therapeutics with a strong emphasis on disease prevention. Naturopathic physicians are trained in the modalities of clinical nutrition, botanical medicine, vitamin/supplement therapy, homeopathy, IV therapeutics, acupuncture, physical medicine, and lifestyle counseling. They also order lab tests and imaging studies as appropriate and they regularly refer to specialists when needed. In addition to classroom training, naturopathic physicians participate in extensive clinical training and must pass two sets of rigorous board exams in order to be eligible for licensure.
